The “Ruta de la Plata,” or “The Silver Route” originally was one of the most important Roman roads in Spain. It leads from Mérida “Emerita Augusta” to Astorga “Asturica Augusta” and has been one of the main axes of the Iberian Peninsula for more than two thousand years.
The Roman road number XXIV was the real vertebral column of western Spain. In Astorga, the Silver Route connected with the roads that lead to the northern coast via Oviedo “Lucus Asturum” to Gijón “Gigia.” Moreover, Astorga was the starting point for several roads that lead to Braga, Zaragoza, Tarragona, and Bordeaux.
In the south, Seville “Hispalis” and Santiponce “Italy” constituted the junction between the roads that followed the course of the River Guadalquivir and connected the cities of Córdoba and Cádiz, the latter being the most important port of the western extreme of the Roman Empire. We invite you to get to know western Spain following a millennial road full of culture, art, and picturesque landscapes.
