GOURMET & CULTURAL JOURNEY THROUGH CASTILLA LA MANCHA (8 Days, 7 Nights)
This journey will take you through the very heart of the Rioja region where Spain’s finest wines are produced.
This fertile land is located in the Ebro valley—one of its waterways, the Oja river, gives its name to the region—and comprises La Rioja province and parts of Álava and Navarra. We can distinguish the Rioja Alta (Upper Rioja) to the west around Haro, which is devoted principally to wine growing, and the Rioja Baja (Lower Rioja) with Logroño and Calahorra as its main towns, where an unusual tableland relief is given over to extensive vegetable growing.
Although the wine has long held pride of place—Rioja wines are mentioned in a document as early as 1102 and they were already being exported to France, Flanders and Italy in the 16th century—it really began to develop in the 19th century when French wine-growers ruined by phylloxera came here to try their luck.
